What is the difference between ULTRA MATTE and MATTE?

ULTRA MATTE (sheen 1) is Blēo’s premium wall and ceiling finish, offering an exceptionally flat, almost velvety appearance with minimal light reflection. Its low sheen makes it particularly suitable for ceilings and large wall surfaces where a uniform, non-reflective finish is desired. Despite its delicate appearance, ULTRA MATTE is durable and can be gently cleaned with a damp cloth. MATTE (sheen 5) has a slightly higher sheen, reflecting a little more light while maintaining a smooth, understated appearance.

Both finishes offer excellent coverage, good opacity, easy application and a durable, even result. They are designed for interior walls and ceilings, providing a consistent finish with minimal visible roller marks when applied correctly.

What is the difference between SEMI GLOSS and HIGH GLOSS?

SEMI GLOSS provides a moderate reflective finish, while HIGH GLOSS produces a more pronounced reflection. Higher gloss levels also make variations in the underlying surface more visible, making careful preparation particularly important.

Which paint finish should I choose for walls?

The appropriate finish depends on the room, the surface and the appearance you wish to achieve. For most interior walls, we recommend ULTRA MATTE (sheen 1) or MATTE (sheen 5). ULTRA MATTE offers an exceptionally flat, almost velvety appearance with minimal light reflection, while MATTE provides a slightly higher sheen. For a more reflective surface, SEMI GLOSS (sheen 30) and HIGH GLOSS (sheen 80) can also be used on walls, introducing a different relationship between colour, light and the surrounding space. All finishes require appropriate surface preparation to achieve the intended result.

Which paint finish should I choose for ceilings?

For ceilings, we generally recommend ULTRA MATTE (sheen 1). Its exceptionally low sheen creates a uniform, almost non-reflective surface, making it particularly suitable for large ceilings where minimal light reflection is preferred. For a different expression, HIGH GLOSS (sheen 80) creates a highly reflective surface that interacts with natural and artificial light, bringing greater depth and reflection to the ceiling. SEMI GLOSS (sheen 30) offers an alternative between the two, introducing a softer level of reflection. The choice depends on whether you want the ceiling to appear calm and uniform or become a more pronounced architectural element within the room.

Which paint finish should I choose for doors, skirting boards and woodwork?

For doors, skirting boards, window frames and other interior woodwork, we generally recommend SEMI GLOSS (sheen 30) or HIGH GLOSS (sheen 80). Both finishes are developed for wood and metal surfaces, offering a durable coating suitable for frequently handled architectural elements. SEMI GLOSS provides a smooth finish with moderate reflection, while HIGH GLOSS creates a more pronounced, reflective surface. ULTRA MATTE (sheen 1) can also be used on suitable interior woodwork where a completely matte appearance is preferred. This allows walls, ceilings and woodwork to be finished in the same colour and sheen, creating a continuous, monochromatic interior. Correct preparation and priming remain essential, particularly on previously painted or untreated wood.

What paint should I use in a bathroom or wet room?

For bathrooms, toilets and other rooms with high humidity, we recommend Blēo WET ROOM (sheen 25), developed specifically for environments exposed to moisture and changing humidity levels. The appropriate paint system depends on the surface and the degree of water exposure. Correct preparation, suitable priming and adequate ventilation are essential for a durable result. Surfaces exposed to direct or prolonged water contact require particular consideration. WET ROOM paint should not be considered a substitute for an approved waterproofing system where one is required.

Can Blēo paint be used on floors?

Yes. Our FLOOR (sheen 30) is specifically developed for interior wood and concrete floors. Its hard-wearing formulation is designed to withstand regular foot traffic and everyday abrasion, providing a durable painted surface. Correct preparation is essential. The floor must be clean, dry, stable and suitably prepared before painting. Depending on the substrate and existing treatment, a dedicated primer may be required. The floor must also be allowed to dry and cure sufficiently before being put back into use. Refer to the product's technical instructions for application and curing requirements.

Can Blēo paint be used on furniture?

Yes. Blēo SEMI GLOSS (sheen 30) and HIGH GLOSS (sheen 80) are suitable for painting furniture and other interior wood and metal objects. Both finishes provide a durable painted surface, with different levels of reflection. SEMI GLOSS offers a softer sheen, while HIGH GLOSS creates a more reflective appearance. For the best result, surfaces should be properly cleaned, sanded where necessary and primed with a product suitable for the material. Allow the paint to cure sufficiently before placing objects on the surface or exposing it to regular use.

Can I use HIGH GLOSS on walls and ceilings?

Yes. Blēo HIGH GLOSS (sheen 80) can be applied to suitable interior walls and ceilings, creating a highly reflective surface that responds to changing light and its surroundings. The reflective finish can emphasise architectural details and introduce depth to a colour, particularly when used across larger surfaces. For a less pronounced reflection, SEMI GLOSS (sheen 30) offers an alternative. High-gloss finishes reveal imperfections more readily than matte finishes, making careful preparation, smooth surfaces and consistent application particularly important.

What is MINERALS?

MINERALS is a textured paint finish developed as part of Blēo's collaboration with British architect John Pawson. The finish creates a mineral-like surface with subtle variations in tone and texture, offering a different expression from conventional smooth wall paint. MINERALS has its own material characteristics and application requirements. Surface preparation, application technique and the final appearance differ from those of standard wall finishes. We recommend consulting the dedicated MINERALS application guide before beginning a project.

Can Blēo paint be used on metal, radiators and pipes?

Yes. Blēo SEMI GLOSS (sheen 30) and HIGH GLOSS (sheen 80) are developed for suitable interior wood and metal surfaces, including metal pipes, frames and architectural details. Metal surfaces require appropriate preparation and priming to ensure adhesion and long-term durability. A suitable metal primer helps the paint bond to the surface and, where necessary, protects against corrosion. For radiators and other heated surfaces, the selected paint system must be suitable for the temperatures reached during normal use. Please contact us if you are unsure about the surface or application.

Does Blēo offer exterior paint?

Yes. Blēo colours are also available as exterior paint, produced to order. Exterior paint requires a formulation suited to the specific surface and environmental conditions. Factors such as substrate, climate, humidity, exposure to rain and sunlight, and local technical requirements all influence the appropriate paint system. For this reason, exterior paint is not offered as a standard ready-to-order product. If you would like to use a Blēo colour for an exterior project, please contact us at bleo@bleocollective.com with details of the surface, location and intended application. We will help identify a suitable solution.
