Formafantasma

Formafantasma is a design studio founded by Italian designers Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin. Based in Milan and Rotterdam, the practice is internationally recognised for its research-led approach to design, exploring the relationship between materials, industry, ecology and architecture across furniture, products, exhibitions and spatial projects.

About

Founded in 2009 by Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin, Formafantasma has established itself as one of the leading voices in contemporary design. Working between studios in Milan and Rotterdam, the practice combines research, critical thinking and material exploration to investigate the cultural, ecological and historical systems that shape the built environment.

Rather than following a recognisable aesthetic, every project begins with extensive research into materials, production methods and context. This process results in furniture, products, exhibitions and architectural installations that are both visually refined and conceptually rigorous, challenging conventional approaches to design while remaining deeply connected to making and industry.

Formafantasma has collaborated with international companies including Flos, Prada, Cassina, Hermès, Fendi, Jil Sander, Max Mara and Artek. Their work has been exhibited and acquired by leading institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Centre Pompidou and the Vitra Design Museum.

Alongside their independent research practice, Formafantasma has developed both paint and tile collections for Blēo, extending their interest in colour, material and architectural surfaces into interiors. The collections reflect the studio's thoughtful approach to colour, where subtle tonal shifts, texture and natural light become integral parts of the spatial experience.

La Bottega Italiana by Formafantasma

The La Bottega Italiana palette draws from the atmosphere of Italian neighbourhood botteghe, spaces formed through routine, daily life and use rather than design intent. It reflects interiors where colour lives in walls, wood and patina, developing quietly over time. Warm, lighter neutrals remain mineral and chalked, meeting deeper, lacquered shades with a quiet richness. The colours sit close together, building depth through layering rather than contrast, creating spaces that feel calm, grounded and enduring. Under warm light, the tones soften and reveal subtle complexity. La Bottega Italiana is a palette designed to settle naturally into interiors and support everyday life over time.
