Coverage and quantities

Calculating quantities and planning paint requirements
How much paint do I need?

Calculate the total area to be painted and allow for the required number of coats. As a general guide, one litre of standard Blēo paint covers approximately 4.5 m² when applying two coats. Actual coverage depends on the substrate, application method and selected finish.

How do I calculate the square metres of a wall?

Multiply the wall's width by its height to calculate the surface area in square metres. Repeat for each wall and add the results together. Large openings may be deducted where appropriate.

How much paint do I need for a room?

Measure the total wall and ceiling areas to be painted, then divide by the expected coverage of the selected paint. Allow an additional quantity where surfaces are porous, irregular or require extra coats.

Should I order extra paint?

A small allowance is recommended for differences in absorption, application losses and future touch-ups. The appropriate amount depends on the project size, surface condition and complexity.

Does paint coverage vary between colours?

Yes. Coverage and opacity can vary with pigment composition, colour intensity, substrate and previous coating. Certain colours may require additional coats to achieve an even, consistent result.

Does HIGH GLOSS require more paint or additional coats?

Yes. For Blēo HIGH GLOSS (sheen 80), we recommend applying three to four coats to achieve maximum depth, uniformity and a highly reflective finish. Building up several thin, even layers helps create the smooth, glossy surface that characterises HIGH GLOSS. When calculating paint quantities, we recommend allowing for three to four coats rather than the standard two coats used for most other finishes.

How much paint should I order for doors, skirting boards and other woodwork?

To calculate the amount of paint required, measure or estimate the total surface area of the woodwork, including doors, frames, skirting boards, edges and decorative profiles. For Blēo SEMI GLOSS, we generally recommend two coats. For HIGH GLOSS, we recommend three to four coats to achieve maximum depth and a uniform, highly reflective finish. Detailed surfaces, mouldings and profiles may require additional paint due to their shape and the application method. We recommend allowing a small additional quantity for application losses and future touch-ups. If you are unsure how much paint your project requires, please contact us with your measurements and selected finish, and we will be happy to help calculate the appropriate quantity.
