VA CO 08 Rouille from valerie_colours — My Everyday by Veerle Wenes

The beauty of imperfection, of the vulgar is what fascinates Wenes, both in her everyday life and in the choice of art and objects. Matter that weathers, that changes its surface, its colour. Rust is simultanously a colour and a non-colour. The colour of the mortar, the paint, taht has to stop rust but at the same time has to stop weathering. To stop the ageing process, to stop decay but never succeeds.

valerie_colours by Veerle Wenes

Architect, gallerist and art director Veerle Wenes is introducing the third of her ‘valeries’: The iconic gallery valerie_traan gallery in Antwerp, Belgium, and the renowned design brand valerie_objects now naturally extend to valerie_colours.

Wenes’s work is a sequence of delightfully unexpected turns — from founding a contemporary architecture centred salon-gallery to a high end design brand, valerie_colours is no exception. A spectacular range of colours ranging from metallic black to flamboyant red, lemon yellow to serene greys.

The colour collaboration with Blēo began in the summer of 2023, resulting in 13 colours patiently developed and tested across Denmark, Belgium, and France. Each colour is developed and selected for its unique meaning to Veerle Wenes and her everyday life, hence the title of the palette, My Everyday.

Veerle Wenes (1956) is a Belgian trained architect, art director and gallerist. In the 1980s Veerle opened the concept and creation agency, SCRITTO, creating colours for the furniture-fabric industry. Veerle Wenes has curated countless exhibitions, among others the celebrated Le Fabuleux Destin du quotidien at MAC’s Grand-Hornu (2010). This new passion led her to open valerie_traan gallery in 2010, located in central Antwerp. valerie_traan was born to push the boundaries between art, architecture, and daily objects by commissioning exhibitions by contemporary artists and designers. Since its opening, valerie_traan has hosted more than 75 exhibitions.

As of 2015, Veerle Wenes is the co-founder and art director of design brand valerie_objects, part of Serax, working with designers such as Muller Van Severen, Big Game, Destroyers/Builders, Maarten Baas, and Maria Scarpulla, to name a few. In 2023, Veerle opened valerie_troost gallery in Oostende, Belgium, an appendix to valerie_traan gallery. This year, 2025, she is launching valerie_colours with Blēo, colour being her long time passion.
