Josef Albers Color Interactions at Designmuseum Danmark
During 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen, Blēo presented Josef Albers Color Interactions at Designmuseum Danmark, marking the launch of a collection developed in collaboration with The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation and with the involvement of Ambra Medda of AMO.
The collection translates 29 colours from Josef Albers’s seminal work Interaction of Color into paint, bringing his investigations of colour perception into an architectural and contemporary context. At Designmuseum Danmark, visitors were invited to discover how the colours had been developed and to experience their relationships beyond the individual shade.
The exhibition took place in the museum’s historic Banquet Hall, where the 29 colours formed the basis of an interactive workshop. Painted papers could be cut, arranged and combined, allowing visitors to explore Albers’s principles through direct experimentation and observe how a colour changes according to those placed around it.
Archival footage of Josef Albers accompanied the installation, connecting the workshop to his teaching and enduring approach to learning through observation and practice. Visitors were also introduced to Interacting with Color: A Practical Guide to Josef Albers’s Color Experiments, published by The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation as an accessible, hands-on introduction to the principles of Interaction of Color.
Together, the exhibition and workshop placed Albers’s study of colour within a physical setting, where the 29 paint colours could be experienced not as isolated tones, but through interaction, juxtaposition and changing perception.
