Installation, Grouting & Sealing
Handmade terracotta is a natural ceramic material that requires correct installation and sealing to ensure long-term performance. As each tile is individually made, subtle variations in colour, texture, dimensions and edge are an inherent part of the material and should be considered throughout the installation process.
Before installation
Inspect all tiles before installation. As handmade terracotta naturally varies from tile to tile, we recommend blending tiles from several boxes during installation to achieve a balanced distribution of colour and texture across the finished surface. Store tiles in a dry environment and keep them in their original packaging until installation.
Installation
Terracotta should be installed on a clean, dry and stable substrate using a high-quality flexible adhesive suitable for ceramic or natural clay tiles. For floor installations, we recommend applying adhesive to both the substrate and the back of the tile (double buttering) to ensure full coverage and long-term stability. Because handmade terracotta can vary slightly in size, we recommend grout joints of approximately 3–5 mm, depending on the chosen format and desired appearance. Installation should always be carried out by an experienced tiler familiar with handmade materials.
Grouting
Allow the adhesive to cure fully before grouting. During grouting, remove excess grout continuously to minimise residue on the tile surface. As terracotta is a porous material, darker grout colours should always be tested before installation, as they may slightly influence the appearance of the tile.
Sealing
Terracotta should always be sealed after installation using a high-quality impregnating sealer suitable for natural terracotta. Sealing reduces water absorption and helps protect the surface from everyday staining while allowing the material to retain its natural appearance. In kitchens, bathrooms and other areas exposed to moisture or frequent use, sealing is particularly important. Depending on wear and use, periodic reapplication of the sealer may be required to maintain optimal protection.
Please note: Installation methods, adhesives, grouts and sealers should always be selected according to the specific project, substrate and local building regulations. We recommend consulting an experienced installer and the relevant product manufacturers before installation.
