White, Light, Wood exhibition by Blēo and John Pawson at the Dinesen Apartment during 3daysofdesign 2025.

White, Light, Wood

Presented during 3daysofdesign 2025, White, Light, Wood transformed the Dinesen Apartment in Copenhagen into an exploration of colour, timber and natural light. Set within the apartment designed by John Pawson, the exhibition introduced Whitescale—a collection of fourteen nuanced colours developed by Pawson for Blēo.

Each colour within the Whitescale palette originates from a natural reference, including chalk, marble, birch bark and dried cotton. Rather than presenting white as a single colour, the exhibition explored its many subtle variations, revealing how undertones shift with changing daylight, surrounding surfaces and architectural proportions.

Installed throughout the Dinesen Apartment, the colours entered into a quiet dialogue with the expressive character of Dinesen wood. Pale painted surfaces, natural timber and carefully controlled daylight created a series of spaces where colour was experienced through atmosphere rather than contrast, allowing visitors to observe how even the smallest tonal differences influence the perception of a room.

White, Light, Wood reflected the shared approach of Blēo, John Pawson and Dinesen: a belief that restraint can create richness, and that carefully considered colour, architecture and natural materials together shape spaces that feel calm, enduring and deeply connected to their surroundings.

Whitescale by John Pawson

Whitescale is a meticulously composed gradient of white tones, each shade calibrated from specific vegetable and mineral colour references. This 14-colour palette reflects John Pawson’s enduring exploration of light and shadow — a study in nuance, restraint, and atmosphere. Developed to create quiet clarity in space, the palette invites a heightened awareness of surface, form, and natural light — offering a subtle yet powerful framework for architectural expression.
