A Contemporary Bathroom in Copenhagen

Set within a classic Copenhagen apartment, this bathroom explores how a restrained palette of colour and material can redefine a familiar architectural setting. Handmade ceramic tiles by Muller Van Severen and HIGH GLOSS paint in JO PA 04 Cotton by John Pawson work together to create an interior where light, reflection and surface become central elements of the space.

Rather than treating the bathroom as a purely functional room, the project approaches it as an architectural interior. The intervention is quiet but deliberate, with proportion, material and light defining the overall experience. Black glazed ceramic tiles by Muller Van Severen wrap the walls and continue seamlessly into the window reveal, allowing the material to meet the existing architecture without interruption. Installed with matching black grout, the surface reads as one continuous plane, where changing daylight gradually reveals subtle variations in reflection, depth and texture.

The floor introduces a lighter counterpoint. Muller Van Severen's Vanilla tiles extend throughout the room, laid with white grout to preserve clarity and reinforce the calm material palette. Together, the black walls and pale floor establish a simple chromatic composition, where contrast is achieved through tone rather than complexity.

Brass fittings introduce warmth without disturbing the overall restraint, while walls and ceilings are finished in HIGH GLOSS paint in JO PA 04 Cotton by John Pawson. The reflective surface extends the movement of daylight throughout the room, strengthening the dialogue between paint, ceramic and glass.

The result is an interior where architecture is shaped through material rather than decoration. Classical proportions remain intact, while colour, reflection and carefully considered surfaces introduce a contemporary expression that continues to evolve throughout the day.
