Historic Façade in Copenhagen
On a historic street in central Copenhagen, this building façade demonstrates how architectural colour can transform the character of an existing building while remaining sensitive to its surroundings. Painted in JAAF 07 Plate V-5 from Blēo's Josef Albers Color Interactions collection, the façade changes continuously with daylight, weather and the shifting colours of the surrounding streetscape.
Developed in collaboration with the Josef & Anni Albers Foundation and curated by Ambra Medda / AMO, the Josef Albers Color Interactions collection translates Josef Albers' pioneering colour studies into a palette of twenty-nine architectural paint colours. Rather than existing as fixed hues, the colours are designed to respond to context, demonstrating Albers' enduring belief that colour is always perceived in relation to its surroundings.
The façade is framed by windows and architectural details painted in JO PA 04 Cotton from John Pawson's Whitescale collection. The warm white creates a calm counterpoint to the muted purple, reinforcing the dialogue between depth, light and proportion while highlighting the building's original architectural features.
The project forms part of Blēo's exterior paint programme, developed for architectural façades where durability, colour precision and material quality are equally important. It illustrates how carefully composed architectural colours can give historic buildings a renewed identity while remaining deeply connected to their original character.
