Villa Varan in Skåne, Sweden
Set in the landscape of Skåne in southern Sweden, Villa Varan is the family home of Kristoffer Fagerström, partner and product designer at Note Design Studio, architect Kajsa Melchior and their two daughters.
The house was conceived in response to its setting, drawing on the couple’s longstanding connection to the region and a shared interest in architecture that works closely with the landscape. Influenced by Swedish architects including Bruno Mathsson and Per Friberg, the design uses traditional materials and a restrained architectural language, with an emphasis on reducing the building’s physical and visual impact on its surroundings.
Close to Kattegatt, Villa Varan is positioned according to daylight and views across the landscape. Morning light enters the kitchen, while the living spaces receive the evening sun. The bedroom faces northwest towards Hallands Väderö and the surrounding fields.
A consistent colour treatment reinforces the continuity of the interior. The entire house is painted in JO PA 03 Chalk by John Pawson for Blēo, a warm white with subtle yellow undertones. Used across the different rooms and changing light conditions, Chalk creates a neutral backdrop to the natural materials and timber elements while introducing warmth throughout the house.
The result is a contemporary Swedish home shaped by landscape, light and a limited material and colour palette.
