Maintenance and care of Tiles by Muller Van Severen

The tiles are made from natural clay and hand-glazed using traditional techniques, giving them their signature texture, variation, and depth. Whether installed in kitchens, bathrooms, on floors, in pools, or living areas, proper care ensures the tiles remain beautiful and endure for generations. With simple, consistent maintenance, the surface will age gracefully — quietly reflecting the life lived around it.

General cleaning

- Clean using a soft cloth or sponge with warm water and a pH-neutral, non-abrasive cleaner.
- Avoid acidic or alkaline products, as these may damage the glaze or dull the surface over time.
- For floors, sweep or vacuum regularly to prevent dirt or grit from scratching the tiles.

Kitchens & bathrooms

- Wipe spills promptly, especially substances like citrus, oil, wine, or coffee, which may cause staining over time.
- In high-use areas, we recommend applying a breathable sealant suitable for glazed ceramic to protect the tiles without altering their appearance.
- Avoid abrasive cleaning tools that can wear down the glaze.

Wet areas & pools

- Zellige tiles are suitable for indoor pools and wet zones such as showers and bathrooms.
- A proper waterproof membrane must be installed beneath the tiles.
- Use a sealant where appropriate to protect the surface and improve cleanability.
- In pools, regular water chemistry maintenance is essential to prevent mineral build-up or discolouration.

Floors & high-traffic areas

Though zellige is typically used on walls, it can be applied to floors in low- to moderate-traffic areas.

- Consider sealing if placed in entryways or kitchens to reduce wear and enhance resistance to stains.
- Expect a soft patina to develop over time — this is part of the material’s natural evolution.
